Planning Cairo with children or mobility needs

Start with what your group needs to enjoy the day: shorter walks, regular breaks, a suitable vehicle or a step-free route. Children’s needs and mobility needs are different, and neither should be inferred from age alone. Confirm each stop, vehicle and boarding arrangement in writing; a private experience is not automatically accessible.

Choose the pace before the itinerary

Describe the walking duration that works for you, whether standing in queues is difficult, and any equipment you want to bring. For children, share ages and practical needs such as rest breaks or a child seat. You do not need to send a diagnosis or medical documents. Ask for one main activity with optional additions rather than a packed list of compulsory stops.

The museum: use official information, then confirm details

The Grand Egyptian Museum publishes information about wheelchairs, lifts, accessible restrooms and seating. Contact the museum about availability, assistance and the route you intend to use. Its facilities do not establish that the transfer vehicle, Giza Plateau or another stop meets the same access needs.

When requesting the GEM and Giza day, ask whether a museum-focused plan with fewer additional stops would better suit your group.

Walking routes: ask for the actual route

For historic Cairo or a food walk, ask about total walking distance, the longest stretch without a seated break, surfaces, steps, crossings and toilet stops. Ask which monuments or interiors are optional and what happens if you want to end early. A route name does not prove step-free access or suitability for a pushchair.

Use the historic Cairo walk as a starting point and request a shorter outline if that suits you better.

Vehicles: check the exact arrangement

Confirm the vehicle type, boarding height, space for luggage and mobility equipment, and whether you need to transfer from a wheelchair. Ask for a suitable child seat by the child’s age and size and obtain confirmation of availability and fitting. Do not assume a seat, ramp, lift or assistance is included because transport is private.

Add these practical details to your airport transfer request before the vehicle is agreed.

Feluccas: confirm boarding before choosing

Ask for the exact dock and boat, the boarding steps or gap, handholds, seating, toilet arrangements, and life jackets in sizes suitable for everyone. Confirm the assistance available without assuming that a crew member can safely lift a person or equipment. If these details cannot be confirmed, choose another activity. Sailing conditions can also change the plan.

Review the felucca experience and request boarding details before agreeing to it.

Two possible starting plans

For a gentler day, request a museum-focused visit with planned breaks and a confirmed vehicle, leaving other stops optional. For a group comfortable with longer walks, request a historic walk with a defined route and rest stops. These are planning examples, not verified accessible itineraries; the provider must confirm the details that matter to your group.

Before you say yes

Your written plan should identify the proposed route and provider, equipment and assistance confirmed, items still unavailable or uncertain, optional stops, and cancellation or change arrangements. This guide is based on public museum information and planning questions. It is not a field inspection, accessibility certification or a guarantee of a supplier’s equipment.
